Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia Suspension By Catholic Church (Suspension Letter)

Catholic Church Suspends Priest (Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia) For Joining Governorship Race In Benue (Suspension Letter)

Catholic priest, Most Reverend Fr Hyacinth Iormem Alia has been suspended by the Catholic bishop of Gboko Diocese, Bishop William Avenya.

It was learnt that the priest was suspended for joining the 2023 governorship race in Benue state under the platform of the All Progress Congress, APC.

Alia is suspended from public ministry after obtaining the APC form in an attempt to take over from Governor Samuel Ortom.

Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia's suspension is contained in a letter dated May 20, 2022 and signed by the Catholic Bishop of Gboko, His Lordship, Most Reverend William Avenya, to all Priests, Religious and Laity.

The letter which was titled: “suspension of Revd. Fr. Hyacinth Iornem Alia from sacred ministry" explained that the church does not allow her clerics to get involved in partisan politics on their own.

“Greetings of the Paschal Season from The Chancery, Gboko. May I begin by acknowledging and appreciating you for your commitment and dedication to the work of spreading the Good News of Christ.

BENUE 2023: FR. ALIA'S SUSPENSION, LONG OVER-DUE, WE EXPECTED IT - SUPPORTERS

Reactions have continued to trail the suspension of the Catholic Priest, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia from Public Ministry by the Catholic Bishop of Gboko, Most Rev. William Avenya.

According to his supporters, this move by the Bishop is normal, proper and correct. AL Utsaha said, 'There is nothing malicious here. The church has rules and the Bishop is enforcing them. Nothing in the letter means that the Bishop is PERSONALLY ANGRY or may not even vote for Fr. Alia if he became the candidate of APC.'

Other supporters of the Catholic Priest are of the opinion that, the suspension is equivalent to 'work/study leave' in public service, as the Priest and his service to the church will resume after eight years in office.

Lending his voice, a Benue NNPP Gubernatorial candidate Simon Gusah said; 'Church is not (I repeat NOT) punishing, nor looking down on Fr Alia, rather, the church is freeing him, to pursue his political aspiration. Once he's done, make no mistake, with a little "timeout" to prepare him for priestly service, he'll be back in the fold. This is as it was for Fr Adasu, and so it shall be for Fr Alia. I repeat my statement at the Alia Alliance meeting in Abuja: Fr Alia kuma Gomna!!!'

The Benue APC frontline gubernatorial aspirant for 2023 general polls, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, wishes to inform members, stakeholders and leaders of the APC family in BENUE state that the suspension order pronounced on him by His Lordship, the Bishop of Gboko Catholic Diocese, William Avenya, is a normal practice of the church. He is implicitly officially freed to go on fully with his strides to rescue Benue from total collapse.

Recall that Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu of blessed memory who served as the second Executive Governor of BENUE state went through the same process.* His footprints are visible for all to see.

He said that as stated clearly in the letter of suspension, he is only suspended from celebrating public Eucharistic Masses, but he remains a priest of the Catholic Church forever. After his tenure ends in public civil service he shall resume his public Masses and ministry.

He said "from the day I took the decision to answer the overwhelming calls of my people to contest the Governorship of Benue with the aim to rescue our people from the shackles of maladministration, I was fully aware of the sacrifice I was going to make. And am convinced that it is worth the cause I am fighting to serve the souls of Benue people and the State. I have a freer leverage to give more time to achieving this pursuit.

"I remain resolute and please don’t be anxious either because I am well prepared and focused. More importantly, I am more charged because I have seen the genuineness in the agitations for me to step in and help salvage the already sorry situation the state has found itself for sometime.”

"As stated in the last paragraph of the suspension letter, I shall return to the public pulpit after I must have served out my mandate as the Governor of Benue state".

Rev. Fr Alia Wins Benue APC Governorship Primaries Re-run

The chairman, Benue State APC governorship primary re-run election committee, Hon. Joel Omajali, has declared Revd. Fr Hyacinth Iormem Alia as the winner of the re-run primary election.

The re-run election was conducted in 12 local government areas alongside three council wards in Buruku local government following the recommendations by the Barr. Uzoamaka Onyeama’s APC appeal panel.

Announcing the result on Thursday at the APC state secretariat in Makurdi, Hon. Joel Omajali stated that a total number of 366,546 voters were registered while 292,930 were accredited.

According to him a total of 270,353 votes were validly cast and Revd Fr Alia polled 195,314 votes to come out victorious.

He gave a breakdown of votes scored by each aspirant to include; Prof. Terhemba Shija: 1,859; Dr.Terlumun Ikya : 2,746; Arc. Bernard Yisa: 338; Dr Mathias Byuan: 14152; Sam Ode: 21698; ESV Godwin Ityoachimin: 860; Barnabas Gemade: 3,831; Michael Kaase Aondoakaa: 3,517; Herman Iorwase Hembe: 720; Terwase Orbunde: 1,393; Steven Lawani: 23,925 and Ayom Mlanga: 0 vote.

The rerun was conducted in Ogbadibo, Ushongo, Konshisha, Oju, Apa, Kwande, Agatu, Ohimini, Ado, Obi, Okpokwu and Apa local government areas.
