Aniebonam told NAN that in 21 years of its existence, the N.N.P.P now has offices in all parts of the federation.
He said the party ”is gradually becoming a movement” and urged Nigerians to join the winning team.
Indeed, the supporters of the NNPP have rapidly increased across the 34 Local Government Areas of Kano State, mainly, the internal crises that arose in the APC and PDP brought about this growth.
The APC in Kano State has been in crisis for more than five years. The crisis that rocked the party began with the parting of ways between Governor Ganduje and his predecessor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and led to the defection of the latter back to the PDP.
The battle between them for the control of the APC remained latent for two years until 2018 when it reached a crescendo. Senator Ganduje orchestrated the removal of Haruna Doguwa, the then party chairman and had him replaced with his loyalist, Abdullahi Abbas.
On the other hand, the PDP which had been the main opposition party in the state since 2015 when APC took the state, lost its status last week when bigwigs defected to the NNPP.
Despite the fact that most of those who defected recently were from the APC, the internal crisis in the PDP helped push Senator Kwankwaso and his loyalists out.
The crisis also made the party unattractive to defectors leaving the APC.
Senator Kwankwaso was the PDP leader when he returned to the party in 2018 but decided to walk away due a crisis between his faction and that of Aminu Wali, a former foreign affairs minister and ambassador.
As the 2021 congress approached and the position of the PDP zonal vice-chairman was given to Kano State, Kwankwaso and Wali fought to get the position.
Political pundits believe the two camps wanted to use the position to consolidate their status as party leaders in the state and zone in general.
Both camps fielded different candidates for the position; with the Kwankwaso camp fielding Mohammed Jamo and Mr Wali’s faction backing Bello Hayatu, a former senator. Mr Wali’s faction emerged victorious.

Who is Kwankwaso: Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, is a Nigerian politician who was the Governor of Kano State from 1999 to 2003 and 2011 to 2015. After he lost his re-election in 2003, he was appointed the first Minister of Defense of the Fouth Republic with no prior military background from 2003 to 2007, under the administration of former president Olusegun Obasanjo. He was later elected to the Senate in 2015 serving one term under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Kano Central Senatorial District.

Mr Kwankwaso is a two-term former governor, a former House of Representatives member, ex-senator and ex-minister. The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Professor Rufai Alkali, has welcomed the former Kano State governor, senator Ibrahim Shekarau to the party.
Shekarau recently joined the NNPP from the All Progressives Congress, a few days after Abdulmumin Jibrin, a former member of the House of Representatives and a director-general of the Bola Tinubu campaign group, joined the party.
Reacting to the movement to the NNPP, Alkali said, “They are pointers to the fact that the NNPP has become the party to beat, not just in Kano State, but all over the country.
“Senator Ibrahim Shekarau’s movement to our party as well as other movements in various parts of the country have now changed the permutations and political alignment in the country ahead of the 2023 general election.
“Recall that before the emergence and sudden growth of the NNPP, the PDP was hitherto considered as the main opposition party in Kano and other parts of the country, and was expected to provide a formidable competition to the APC in 2023 as it did in 2019.
“But with the PDP and the APC engrossed with leadership problems, our party has become the precious bride being sought after by many politicians across the country.”
