Otto Orondaam Virtual School Classroom: Otto Orondaam, a Nigerian social entrepreneur and Founder of Slum2School Africa built a virtual learning classroom that would keep schools safe and students learning from the comfort of their home during the coronavirus outbreak.

Orondaam developed the initiative through his organisation Slum2School Africa - a volunteer driven organization dedicated to providing education to children living in slums & remote communities across Africa.

According to Orondaam, his organisation started developing the initiative months ago when the coronavirus pandemic forced thousands of kids across Africa out of school with many of them engaging in various abusive activities during the lockdown.

“At Slum2school we believe that the future of education is digital and every child deserves to have access to the best of educational tools to learn and succeed in the 21st century regardless of their social and economic background,” Orondaam said in an interview with Technext.

Their solution was to set up virtual and cluster learning programs across different communities through their state-of-the-art virtual learning structure.

Following the successful implementation of their solution, Orondaam took to his Twitter page to announce the launch of the virtual learning classroom that would help 948 kids learn remotely adding that his organisation plans to reach 10,000 kids.

“Impossible is Nothing. I'm so excited to announce the launch of our first Virtual Learning Classroom in Africa. Today 948 kids can learn remotely but we want to reach 10,000kids. Kindly RT & let's support kids across communities to learn during & after this period.”

Winner Of Prudential Zenith US$100,000 Award Grant: Otto Orondaam while celebrating the monetary Award wrote on his Instagram page;

"I'm so excited to share that we have just won the Prudential Zenith US$100,000 Award Grant for "Sustainable Innovative Solutions birthed during Covid-19 Pandemic"

And we are proud that our Virtual Learning Classroom Program won.
________________
When the pandemic broke out we had just launched our Innovation Hub and then we had to shut it down immediately because three of our volunteers, board members and partners who had just flown in for the Hub launch were on that British Airways flight.
Mehn, as we were shutting down, It felt like I was having a heart attack because all the plans we had made had just been shattered, but then I pulled my team together, we made a promise not to lay off any teacher, field officer or staff and so we had to rethink our model.
_

We didn't have all the money in the world but we had a dream and a fearless determination. While the world was isolating we were cracking codes. I remember spending late nights at the office and even falling asleep there severally trying to figure out how to build this virtual classroom.
_
When we realized that Havard Business School had built theirs for over $5million I knew the Nigerian spirit in us will definitely get it for way less.
_
_
Today I'm so excited to share that we have one one of our first grants.

This is such an exciting news as this will bring us closer to our goal of supporting 10,000 deserving children across Nigeria.

_
_
I want to thank my amazing team @slum2school (The adventurers) for always believing in our crazy ideas. Thanks to everyone who have believed in us, supported us and is continuously working with us to keep scaling our dreams. Together we will be touching the lives of millions of children across Africa even when normal schools reopen.

We are incredibly optimistic about our journey to 10,000 and we look forward to achieving more with you all."
