The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered a probe into the allegations of ra.pe levelled against Music Icon, Oladapo Oyebanjo aka D’Banj.
This is contained in a letter with reference number CB.7000/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOl.484/801 signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the IG, DCP Idowu Owohunwa.
The letter was addressed to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department, Area 10, Garki, Abuja.
The IG’s letter was in response to a petition written to the IG by Mr. Tommy Ojoge-Daniel, a lawyer to Miss Seyitan Babatayo, who accused D’Banj of raping her in 2018.
The letter written by the IG is titled, ‘Re: Petition Against (1) Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo (Aka D’Banj) for R.ape Indecent S.exual Assault, Attempted Assault on Miss Seyitan Temidayo
The letter read in part, “I forward herewith copy of letter dated June 5, 2020 received from Ojoge, Omileye and Partners on the above underlined subject. I am to respectfully convey the directive of the Inspector-General of Police that you treat.
“Accept the assurances of my esteemed regards please.”
Seyitan’s friend, Benjamin Ese, in a Twitter thread in early June had told the story of how D’Banj allegedly ra.ped Seyitan at a hotel two years ago – in December 2018.
She said it happened at an all-white party where D’Banj allegedly offered her friend some money to spend the night which she rejected until he surprisingly showed up in Seyitan’s hotel room around 2 in the midnight.
“D’Banj drove all the way from Eko hotel where he was lodged and came down to glee hotel in Victoria Island at midnight 2.40 am and collected the spare key from the receptionist,” Ese said in the thread which has since sparked an outrage.
She said D’Banj allegedly “got into my friend’s room and forcefully thre.atened he would walk her out of the room na.ked, kept his fingers in her va.gina and repeatedly ra.ped her.”
The ra.pe experience, Ese said had caused Seyitan some trauma since the incident happened.
One month after Ese’s tweets, Seyitan came out publicly to present herself as the lady who was allegedly ra.ped by D’Banj in December 2018.
The musician, however, denied the allegations levelled against him and asked his accuser to make a public apology and also pay him the sum of N100m in damages.
On Tuesday, however, some policemen allegedly acting on the instruction of the Oliver Twist crooner detained Seyitan for over 24 hours and intimidated her, making her delete all chats, social media posts and other vital information from her phone.
The incident has sparked an outrage on social media with D’Banj trending on social media for the last two days
D’Banj is one of Nigeria’s biggest artists having won several music awards, including the awards for Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009, Best International Act: Africa at the 2011 BET Awards, and Best-selling African Artist at the 2014 World Music Awards and the Evolution award at the 2015 MTV Africa Music awards.
Feminists and several rights groups have called on the police to ensure that justice is served regardless of the musician’s status.
The matter took another turn on Wednesday when Babatayo was reportedly arrested by the police from Sodipo station. Her lawyer, Olamide Omileye of Ojoge, Omileye, and Partners, told Premium Times that she was forced to delete her tweets on the ra.pe allegations while in police custody.
But Babatayo tweeted that she and her mother were never arrested by the police.
“I’m moving on and leaving everything behind me,” she said in one of the tweets she posted to her handle on Wednesday evening.
Those tweets, Omileye said, were posted under duress.
Like Omileye, Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi of Stand to End Rape said Babatayo was arrested by the police. Osowobi said Babatayo spent the night in a police cell.
In another twist, a tweet, seemingly promoting a yet-to-be-released song by Dbanj, was posted to Babatayo’s Twitter handle on Thursday. A picture of the artist with a cryptic message was also posted by the handle.
“To be very honest this was never our intention, we love you guys, let’s leave our life stress free #StressByDbanj,” the message reads, followed by a dove and blue heart emojis.

The Ra.pe Accusation Against Dbanj By Seyitan Temidayo aka Seyitan Babatayo
"I was invited for an all white party at Eko Atlantic(splash off)which was an all night party on the 30th of December 2018, by franklin Dbanj ex manager at that time and I went with my friend then named Laide.
When I got to the party I met a girl at the party named Oyin, who was with a guy who happens to be Dbanj’s friend. she asked who I came with I told her the person I came with already left.
When I was leaving oyin and I exchanged number and she asked where I was lodged I told her Glee hotel in VI, and she said it was the same hotel she was lodged and I asked her if she could drop me off she said that wasn’t a problem.
On getting to the hotel, Oyin called me when I got to my room and told me dbanj saw me at the party and he wanted to be with me for the night and I was offered a sum of money but I bluntly refused because I wasn’t interested.
So I slept off within 5/6am and pls note (I’m a naked sleeper) and woke up and found Dbanj in my room already and I asked him what he was doing in my room he didn’t say a word and *asked if I was a baby* and started fingering me,
I went ahead to threaten him that I was going to shout he said if I shout I’ll leave the hotel naked, Dbanj raped me.
When he left and I got to see he came in with an extra key (card) and I later found out that Dbanj lodged all his staffs in the hotel..Then I called my supposed friend Oyin who I saw at the party if she planned with Dbanj she said No.
She came downstairs to meet me where I was crying. She asked us to go upstairs to meet her guy who was Dbanj’s friend. when I got there the guy was disappointed and begged me to keep quiet and promised me Dbanj will call me and apologize.
And he gave my friend 100dollars to give me to take medication.
I’m so livid and mad seeing a rapist being an advocate for rape. This is my story and I know there are lots of girls who can’t come out to say their story. Don’t be ashamed to say your story it took me 2 years to write my Rape story #wearetired."
