Sharing her life story and how she started suffering from the sickness, scleroderma, Violetemor Onitsha (Nicholas Violet) told Punch in a July 2023 interview:
My name is Violet Nicholas Onitcha. I am from Warri Southwest in Delta State. I am 27 years old but will be 28 years old by September. I am the first and the only female child of my parents; I have two siblings.I started experiencing scleroderma in 2014.I discovered dark spots on my back and my hands gradually became very dark in colour. With the discoloration of the skin, my skin became extremely dark, dark spots all over my back, joint pain, numbness, tingling fingers and extreme weight loss. My neck became so stiff that I couldn’t turn it and I couldn’t walk. But now, I can walk.We visited different hospitals. At the initial stage, they could not detect anything wrong. Some would say probably I stepped on a poisonous object. We even visited some herbal centres; some of them even termed it to be a spiritual force, ‘juju’ or a family problem.After a series of tests, I was diagnosed with scleroderma; so, a rheumatologist at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital told us that the sickness could not be cured but could only be managed through drugs. As time passed, my condition became worse, and I got so lean and very dark.
