Bello Turji And Sheikh Gumi Meeting (Photos)

Popular Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Dr. Ahmad Gumi met with some notorious bandits in Zamfara State in February 2021.

The bandits are said to be those terrorising Shinkafi Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking during the meeting, top armed commanders of the group, Kachalla Turji of Shinkafi and Kachalla Muhammadu Bello, lamented that security personnel had killed many of their family members, with many of them losing virtually all their possessions through cattle rustling, extortion by security agents and military bombardments.

As a result, they lamented that thousands of their youths do not have anything to do and there is no means of livelihood hence their decision to go into arms struggle.

They accused the government of not being sincere in ending instances of banditry and kidnappings.

The cleric pleaded for their understanding and urged them to cease all hostilities and allow him to reach out to President Muhammadu Buhari to see how their legitimate grievances could be addressed immediately.

Gumi told them that they should not expect magic from him as his success would depend on the cooperation or otherwise that he would get from the Nigerian government which has the authority over decision making.

He presented them with Islamic books, including copies of the Qur’an and wrappers. He said everything he was doing was being funded by a foundation and with the help of other well-meaning individuals and not the government.

Bello Turji, leader of bandits, writes, seeking for dialogue with Zamfara, Nigeria govts (Full script in English)

We are grateful to God who has given us this opportunity to bring this message to the Emir of Shinkafi, through the Governor of Zamfara state, Alh Mohammed Bello Matawalle (Baraden Maradun) and to the President Mohammed Buhari.

This is a letter (originally written in Hausa as seen below) from Mohammed Bello Turji Kachalla, the one we all know about.

Having said that, I want the Emir of Shinkafi, the governor of Zamfara and the president, to look up to Allah and his Prophet.

The purpose of this letter is as follows:

1. The killings of people going on which is not being publicized, the killings by bandits, herdsmen, kidnapping for ransom and even by security agents are our making. All these will come to an end by the grace of Allah. The government will have to play its part to ensure that this is achieved. As long as ethnicity and tribalism is eliminated, we need to all remain as one big family and forgive one another as Allah commands.

2. Your highness, we would like to have a sit down with the traditional rulers in this country and also the religious leaders. If this is done, I Mohammed Bello Turji Kachalla, will make sure to disarm all my men and hand over all our arms to the government of Nigeria. As long as the government promises to take care of us the way it is taking care of the rest of the country and stop the stigmatization of my people.

3. Your highness, I want to assure you that we are not in contention with the government of Nigeria and we do not want any other country apart from this, we are not seeking power of any kind, rather the ugly things we Fulanis are facing in this country has pushed us to react the way we do and made us want to defend ourselves to the detriment of the peace of the nation.

4. Your highness, we are not thieves and we don’t mean to harm anyone. This letter is not born out of deception and we would not want to be deceived. Everything should be done in transparency for Allah’s sake and for the sake of the peace of our nation. So we can go back to the way we were in the past. We should all be law abiding and allow the security agents to do their job and punish anyone found wanting. No form of arms would be seen with anyone except in the hands of the security agents as it’s supposed to be.

5. Your highness, this is our last request. Just as we said earlier, we will like to make sure that all traditional rulers and all our Muslim leaders, most especially Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, to be present at this meeting. This is because he is the only one who understands us and he has been paying us visits to sympathize with us. He has been preaching to us and we have seen the effectiveness of his messages in our lives. We only want the peaceful existence of everyone in this country.

May Allah give us all the strength to keep these promises without fail.

This letter is from Mohammed Bello Turji Kachalla.

New Photos Of Bello Turji Surface, Gang Members Spotted Wielding Weapons

The notorious bandit's leader terrorizing the northwestern part of the country, Bello Turji has continued to evade capture and attack remote villages and communities of Zamfara, Sokoto, Niger and Katsina state. His recent pictures have surfaced in which he was captured wearing military camouflage while his gang members flanked him welding sophisticated machine guns.

Another factor that may capture people's attention is how the infamous bandit sat comfortably on a plastic chair wearing military camouflage. His boldness and audacity to challenge the security forces are worrisome considering the poor living status of his criminal empire.

Bello Turji has led several attacks on Zamfara communities in the year 2021 which resulted in serious economic degradation and humanitarian crisis in the state and its neighbouring communities. This prompted the federal government to deploy additional security personnel to tackle the atrocities of the bandits.

Banditry has become one of the major security challenges being faced in the northwest. There are several bandits groups terrorising the region but the security forces were able to neutralise many of these criminals. However, Bello Turji and some of his gang members remained at large.

Find Bello Turji Dead Or Alive - MURIC Identifies Man Behind Sokoto Killings

13th December, 2021

PRESS RELEASE:

SOKOTO KILLINGS: FIND BELLO TURJI, DEAD OR ALIVE - MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has tasked the Nigerian Army to find Bello Turji, a notorious bandit leader, dead or alive. The group believes that he is the key to the defeat of banditry in Sokoto and Zamfara states.

MURIC threw the challenge in a press release issued by its director and founder, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Monday, 13th December, 2021.

The statement reads:

“Sources close to the Sokoto branch of MURIC have reported the strong nexus between one Bello Turji, a notorious bandit, and insecurity in Sokoto and Zamfara states. He coordinates almost all attacks and he was allegedly behind the barbaric shooting and burning of passengers in a bus in Sokoto last week.

“Currently, he is believed to be somewhere in the Eastern part of Sokoto. He was the one who challenged the government sometime in August 2021 demanding the release of his father or else about 150 people kidnapped around Shinkafi would be slaughtered.

“More than 500 people have been killed by bandits under the leadership of Bello Turji within the last six months between Isa, Sabon Birni, Rabah and Goronyo Local Government.

“Hundreds of bandits take their inspiration from him. The Nigerian military needs to find this dangerous man. Nail him and bandits in Sokoto and Zamfara zone will be in disarray. A commando style operation may become necessary in order to neutralize Bello Turji. But he must be found at all cost, dead or alive.”

Director,

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC)

Bello Turji And Mohammad Danshanawa

Mohammad Danshanawa described Turji in viral music audio as “a lion, untouchable and a great leader”.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal Orders Arrest Of Musician Mohammad Danshanawa For Praising Bello Turji

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto has ordered the arrest of a musician, Mohammad Danshanawa for praising wanted bandit kingpin, Bello Turji.

Danshawa, in viral music audio, described Turji as “a lion, untouchable and a great leader”.

Governor Tambuwal, commenting on the song, said, “We ordered for his arrest to serve as a deterrent.

“This further informs why I advised that the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces should consider because, in those places where there are security challenges, the inhabitants are willing to be trained on weapons handling.”

Some residents of Sokoto also condemned the action of the singer, according to Sahara Reporters.

Squadron leader, Aminu Bala, said, “The song is capable of misleading young people to begin to idolize or even pay allegiance to the terrorist.”

Another man resident in Northern Nigeria, Abdullahi Bala, “This is a very sad development; and it is coming at a time of acute security deterioration. As it is, one cannot move from Sokoto here to Illeila, yet someone is praise-singing a terrorist.”

Bello Turji: A Deal For The Terrorist? By Sunday Onyemaechi Eze (The Nation)

SIR: Crime has a unique way of offering criminal elements a place of undue fame. This was the case of Bello Turji Kachalla. Before now he was a complete nonentity. He came to criminal spotlight just after a notorious gang leader, Auwalu Daudawa the mastermind of Kankara School kidnap who claimed to have repented and surrendered arms to Zamfara State government in a celebrated case violated the deal and went back into the forest to ply his illegitimate trade. He eventually died afterwards.

Turji’s major dare-devil exploits include ruthless murder of innocent people; he sacked many villages and stopped functional markets, seizes food items. Schools are closed for his sake. He deposes village heads and appoints his. He levies taxes on communities. Turji is a societal menace, a killer who deserves full measures of his own devilish antics and preoccupation.

The governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal in the wake of the recent burning incident in the state could not hide his hopelessness and helplessness in the face of a rampaging monster devouring the people at will and destroying the entire state and the north in general. He visited President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja and demanded for a declaration of state of emergency on security in Sokoto.

Receiving a fact-finding team of federal security and intelligence chiefs led by National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno in Sokoto, the governor confirmed that “parts of this state are in the appalling grip of bandits and kidnappers, marauding and scaring the populace in recent times.” He said attacks and kidnappings now take place “in broad daylight in some parts of Isa, Sabon Birni, Tangaza, Illela and several other local government areas.”

Like every other state in Nigeria Sokoto has had its fair share in the hands of terrorist bandit attacks for some years now. The governor informed the federal delegation that “this situation is exacerbated by the influx of bandits and criminals displaced by the defective maneuvers of security personnel deployed under Operation Hadarin Daji in neighboring Zamfara State. He pointed out that the operation “was carried out without any blocking force around Sokoto State”.

Before then in an emergency address to the people of Sokoto, the governor literally blamed the security agencies for allowing fleeing bandits easy way to infiltrate Sokoto.

Now, a letter written in Hausa language trending on the social media credited to Bello Turji Kachalla addressed to President Buhari, Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State through the Emir of Shinkafi is calling for the disbandment of civil groups bearing arms arguing that only security agencies should. The terrorist leader called for talks between the terrorists, politicians, traditional rulers and Imams to chart a way forward. He suggested that Sheik Gumi be at the meeting for his understanding, sympathy and preaching to them. He claims they are not at war with the nation and expressed their willingness to return to normal life. He promised to personally lead in the seizure of weapons and weaponry from other terrorists should the government accede to his demands.

The olive branch from a killer gang leader should be approached with caution. At a time Governor Bello Matawalle freely offered repentant terrorists amnesty, he totally ignored the opportunity. He should therefore not be trusted. Rather, the armed forces should exert more pressure to arrest or neutralise him. It seems to discerning minds that he is losing grounds, hence the letter. To bring to a definite end the reign of terror of Bello Turji and others who constitute societal nuisance should be our utmost priority. Turji who happily supervises killings by the sword should die by the sword too. What we expect now is his head on a platter.

Bandit Bello Turji, King of Gobir By THISDAYLIVE

Listening last week to the anguished cries of leaders of the Gobir Community Development Association [GCDA] over the fate that has befallen their land, I could not help but wonder how an area that was pre-colonial Hausaland’s most powerful, most militaristic kingdom is now at the mercy of an itinerant bandit.

This area that existed for 800 years as the mighty city-state of Gobir was incorporated into the Sokoto Caliphatewiththe death of Sarkin Gobir Yunfa and thefall of its capital city, Alkalawa in 1808.The British seized sovereignty over the area in 1903 and incorporated it into Nigeria, while the French seized its northern fringes and built it into Niger Republic. Within Nigeria, the old Gobir Kingdom is now split between Sokoto and Zamfara states. Within the two states, it was divided into several LGAs and traditional domains which rule over its people.

Or at least, they used to. Within this year abandit king has risen to become the de facto ruler of this great old region.GCDA’s chairman Ibrahim Alhassan says bandit Bello Turji has seized sovereign authority from Federal, state and local governments, Sokoto Sultanate, Shinkafi Emirate in Zamfara State and all the district and village heads under them.

GCDA chairman’s open letter to President Buhari last week said Sabon Birni, Goronyo and Isa LGAs in Sokoto State and Shinkafi LGA in Zamfara State are now under Turji’s firm control. He kidnaps and rapes at will. He blocks roads, sacks markets, seizes food and any material he fancies, and kills anyone who resists. He sacks village heads and appoints his own village heads. He levies taxes on communities. If any village fails to pay the levies, Bello Turji visits it with instant and merciless attack, kills anyone he can find, including women and children.

Among the villages that Turji sacked were Gajit, Lajinge, Tarah, Unguwar Lalle, Kurawa, Gangara and Garin Idi. A month earlier, Bello Turji sacked Garki village, five kilometers from Sabon Birni, and killed 80 people in one night. On Tuesday last week, this bandit carried out one of his most heinous acts yet. His goons stopped a bus that left Sabon Birni for Gusau, set it ablaze and burnt 23 people alive. His men stood guard around the bus while people were roasted.

Under Bello Turji’s rule, GCDA said “there is no farming, no traveling and no markets” in the region. Its chairman added that “The biggest problem we are facing today is that you are in your house and terrorists come and abuse you in front of your family. And all the communities that I told you about are taxed, and they have paid. But even though they have paid, they have not found peace.”

When Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal received a fact-finding team of Federal security and intelligence chiefs led by National Security Adviser Major General Babagana Monguno in Sokoto last Friday, he confirmed that part of his constitutional mandate to rule over Sokoto State has been ceded to Bello Turji. Tambuwal said “parts of this state are in the appalling grip of bandits and kidnappers, marauding and scaring the populace in recent times.”He said attacks and kidnappings now take place “in broad daylight in some parts of Isa, Sabon Birni, Tangaza, Illela and several other local government areas.” GCDA apparently spoke only about its own area of concern, Gobir, but other non-Gobir areas are under the bandits’ boots as well.

The brutal rule of Bello Turji suddenly calls for a reevaluation of the history of old Gobir Kingdom. It recasts 17th Century Gobir kings in a new, favourable light. As primary school pupils in the old North Western State, we reached our conclusions regarding the nature of old Gobir kings from the letter that Sheikh Usman Danfodio wrote to Sarkin Gobir Bawa Jan Gwarzo in 1788. Shehu complained of “oppression” and high taxes levied on peasants. Sarki Bawa suddenly looks like a very benevolent king with the benefit of hindsight. Gobir peasants might be saying these days that if this is what Nigeria has to offer, bring back Bawa Jan Gwarzo, Nafata and Yunfa.

Even though parts of Sokoto State have suffered from bandit attacks for some years now, Governor Aminu Tambuwal told the Federal delegation on Friday that “this situation is exacerbated by the influx of bandits and criminals displaced by the defective maneuvers of security personnel deployed under Operation Hadarin Daji in neighboring Zamfara State.”Operation Hadarin Daji, he said, “was carried out without any blocking force around Sokoto State.”

Or for that matter, any other neighbouring state because as wecan all see, the center of gravity of bandit terrorism in Nigeria has been shifting under military/security pressure from Zamfara to western Katsina to Birnin Gwari area of Kaduna State to southern Kaduna State to Abuja-Kaduna highway to Shiroro/Rafi areas of Niger State, to Zuru region of Kebbi State and up into northern Sokoto State and western Zamfara State and back. Chase them from this region, and they promptly slip into the neighbouring one, since the forests are contiguous.

Nor was Bello Turji the first bandit kingpin to seize a slice of Nigeria and run it as his fief. Until a few years ago, the top notch bandit in Zamfara State was Buharin Daji, i.e. Buhari of the Forest. His name implied that President Buhari’s rule ends in the urban areas whereas he ruled over the countryside. Buharin Daji was killed in a gang fight by his top lieutenant Dogo Gide, the man who appeared on a video clip and claimed “credit” for the kidnap of over 100 Federal Government Girls College, Birnin Yauri students and teachers. Local communities in the region also identify Ado Aleiro and Dankarami, along with Bello Turji, as the bandit kings that reign in their areas.

Ideally, bandits and terrorists in the entire region should be simultaneously wiped out in a concerted military and security operation to prevent them from seeping into other areas. Apparently, the military and security forces lack the manpower to do this. For now, top priority should be to end the reign of Bello Turji in northern Sokoto and western Zamfara states. I suspect that three army battalions advancing from the west, east and south can do it. The area isn’t all that big. It is open Sahelian with sparse tree cover and sparse vegetation, especially during the dry season. There should be enough blocking action to prevent him and his gangs from seeping out into another region. They might head north into Niger Republic. I hope they do, because the rough-and-ready Nigerien gendarmes are up to the task.

The last major battle in this region took place 185 years ago. At that Battle of Gawakuke in 1836, Caliph Muhammadu Bello assembled and personally led an allied force that, in one day, crushed a large rebel army using horses, spears, swords, bows and arrows. We expect to see very soon a Nigerian Army General, at the head of a force of tanks, APCs, machine guns, helicopters and Super Tucanos speaking to Bello Turji in the language he understands.

Terror Kingpin, Turji, Releases 52 Abducted Victims (Daily Trust)

Bello Turji, a notorious bandit in Zamfara State, on Monday, released 52 people who had been under captivity for a long time, sources familiar with the matter told Daily Trust.

“The freed captives are currently being moved from the forest to an agreed spot where they will be ferried to Shinkafi town.

“Buses have been lined up and have been directed to start moving towards Maberiya, an area just 5km east of Shinkafi town,” a resident who craved anonymity told our reporter.

Turji is the arrowhead of killings and kidnappings around Shinkafi – Sabon Birni and Isah local government areas of Zamfara and Sokoto states.

Last month, Turji wrote Shinkafi Emirate Council, stressing his willingness to lay down his arms and embrace peace.

Sources said it is part of the dialogue with Turji that led to the release of the kidnapped victims.

Turji’s Associate Makes Shocking Revelations On Their Operations

Musa Kamarawa, a close associate of a notorious bandit kingpin, Muhammad Bello, aka Turji, has revealed the names of local informants and collaborators who supply uniforms, food and drugs to the terrorists operating in the Sokoto-Zamfara axis of North West Nigeria.

In a video clip obtained by DAILY NIGERIAN, Mr Kamarawa, 33, revealed that the kidnap kingpin’s armoury is an array of assorted weapons including AK 47 rifles, submachine guns, rocket launchers and anti-aircraft guns.

He said Mr Turji had well-established structure of armed men spread across a vast area of their operation.

“Turji is my bosom friend, we are always in touch and we seek each other’s advice on our operations most of the time,” Mr Kamarawa revealed.

He gave the name of one Dr. Abubakar Hashimu Kamarawa as the supplier of shoes and military uniforms to the bandits.

Mr Kamarawa, a nephew to former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, who revealed that his elder brother Basharu is wanted by the Police for conniving with immigration officials to import arms, gave the names of other collaborators as “Yahaya, Dan Tseka, Gwandi and Summallawa”

He said some of them who studied health-related courses supply the hard drugs taken by the bandits before going on operation.

“Pabro who is one of them, is an Igbo pharmacy owner, while Muntari Ajiya is Hausa,” he noted.

On Mr Turji’s manpower strength, Mr Kamarawa said at least 100 armed men guard his base.

“Turji is surrounded by over 100 gunmen from his main operation base, besides other units.

“The only difference between the Khaki they wear on and those of real soldiers, is dirt. They are always dirty but the real soldiers are cleaner in outlook,” he said.

Speaking on Mr Turji’s commanders, Mr Kamarawa said they include Turji’s sibling called Doso; Sani Duna, Bello Danbuzu, Atarwatse, among others.

He further revealed that Kabiru Maniya, Alhaji Shadari are among Mr Turji’s men who update him about their gruesome exploits by sending him WhatsApp photos.

Mr Kamarawa, who regretted his actions, vowed to cooperate with the Nigerian security operatives in exposing all criminal bandits across the region.

Mr Kamarawa was nabbed in Abuja along with one Bashar Audu, a Nigerien national who was caught with a consignment of Indian hemp for Turji’s men.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Mr Turji is a 28-yr-old ruthless bandit leader who is operating in Sokoto and Zamfara State.

He has at various times rejected peace deals with the Zamfara State Government. The only time he said he was open to dialogue was when Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Ahmed Gumi, visited his camp in Zurmi, Zamfara State.

In September 2021, reports emerged that the notorious banditry kingpin has relocated his headquarters from Fakai in Zurmi, Zamfara State, to Isa, east of Sokoto State.

His new headquarters, according to multiple sources including a security one, is situated between Tozai and Suruddubu.

Speaking on the reported relocation of bandits to Sokoto East, the senator representing the zone, Ibrahim Gobir, said majority of the bandits had relocated to Sabon Birni and Isa Local Government Areas as a result of the ongoing military operations in the Zamfara axis.

Speaking on the floor of the senate, Mr Gobir said bandits have now infiltrated the zone due to absence of a major military offensive against them in the area.
