Dr. Chike Akunyili, husband to late former Information Minister, Prof. Dora Akunyili, has been murdered by gunmen.
The Nation learnt he was killed at Umuoji in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State on Tuesday evening.
Though details of the incident are still sketchy, a source close to the family said the deceased was still at the University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association (UNAA) where the late Dora was honoured some hours before he was killed.
The source, who was shattered by the murder, said: “God, pls render the devil and his agents powerless and useless.
“I was with this man yesterday same yesterday at Sharon Hall, All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha. It was an occasion of University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association (UNAA), Onitsha branch event where they honoured late Dora Akunyili.
“He spoke glowingly about Dora and made a donation of 500k to the association.
He was there with his son ,Obum now working with Anambra state government.
“We saw them off to the car and it was emotional when Obum hugged him tight as both of them separated to join their respective vehicles.
“Obum was in a white Hilux while the man was in a big Jeep (i think Prado). God have mercy!”

They entered through umusiome and saw the civil defence officer riding on his bike, they pursued him and killed him.... On reaching Afor Nkpor, they met traffic jam and coincidentally Dora's husband was with army excort waiting for the holdup to clear... The soldiers jumped down from their motor to control the traffic, that was when they ran into the men of the underworld. They shot three soldiers to death, set their car ablaze. One of them ran into one shop and was begging them, they commanded everybody in the shop to leave the shop and shot the soldier Shouting at them to leave Biafra land that they are not needed.
According to eye witnesses who was once my make up student. He lives close to Afor Nkpor .... My questions are: Why killing Dora's husband,? Why shooting those cows? Have they forgotten our Igbo brothers still live in the North.... The civil defence guy that was going home from work is an Igbo guy...."
IPOB Reacts To The Death Of Dr. Chike Akunyili, Says He Was Assassinated (Political Assassination)
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) says those who killed the husband of late former Minister of Information, Prof Dora Akunyili, are the ones contesting for Anambra governorship elections.
The group revealed that the killers who poisoned the former Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) did so for exposing the death of former President Umaru Yar'Adua.
IPOB stated that these same culprits were behind the gruesome murder of her husband, Dr Chike Akunyili.
IPOB disclosed these in a statement.
It also said it had no hands in the wanton killings of the members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra on Monday.
Recall that a Lagos APC Chieftain and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's aide, Joe Igbokwe, alleged that IPOB was responsible for the killings in Anambra state.
The pro-Biafra group in the statement said, "We have several times raised the alarm that some cruel politicians are hiding under the cloak of the situation in Biafra land to eliminate their political enemies and blame it on IPOB."
"We don't know why wicked politicians especially in Imo and Anambra States will choose to slaughter their opponents and turn around and point accusing fingers at IPOB or the operatives of Eastern Security Network ESN.
"Politicians should leave us alone and settle their scores. No IPOB member or ESN operative is involved in such barbarity. Restoration of Biafra is our mandate!"
It also stated that it has no interest in the politics of the region.
"Our position on Anambra election will be made public at the right time through our normal channels of information dissemination. Anything to the contrary should be disregarded.
"Members of the public should stop believing social media fake stories purported to have emanated from IPOB. We are an organised movement and we don't hide our position on any matter," it continued.
On Akunyili's murder, IPOB said, "Those who killed Dora Akunyili husband killed his wife with poison from Fulani because she exposed the death of Yar’Adua for Goodluck Jonathan to take over President of failed Nigeria.
"They know themselves. Those conspired to poisoned Prof. Dora Akunyili, they're contesting governorship election in Anambra State today. We have no issues with Chike Akunyili and we don't know him, those behind this act must stop this and stop using IPOB’s name.
"We don't want anybody to blame IPOB because we must get them. This is pure political assassination going on in Anambra State now. And it has been perfected by NIGERIA. DSS security agents are doing this to paint IPOB back in the face of support and encouragement we are getting from our people.
"We know their plans and gimmick to discourage Biafrans who are encouraging and supporting us but it can't work for them, in the near future those committing these atrocities in Imo and Anambra States will hear from IPOB and our people should not blame us because we must get them."

Governor Willie Obiano Places ₦20 Million Bounty On Chike Akunyili Killers
Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state has placed a bounty of N20 million on the killers of Dr. Chike Akunyili, husband of late NAFDAC DG, Dora Akunyili.
In a public address on Wednesday evening, Obiano condemned the recent spate of attacks in different areas of the state.
In his words; "I have received from Security Commanders, Offices of some political parties, branded campaign vehicles and individuals occupying them have been attacked with killings and burning of vehicles observed."
"Other innocent road users have become victims of this menace with many losing their lives and others, their properties."
"Between Sunday 26th and yesterday 28th September, 2021 attacks on citizens at Oko, Agulu, Obosi, Nkpor, Nnobi, Nnewi and other places have left about ten (10) people dead including an illustrious son of this State, Dr Chike Akunyili, husband of late Prof Dora Akunyili who was reportedly gunned down yesterday around Nkpor."
"These are our own people dying every day and for what reason? Ndi Anambra, these attacks and accompanying deaths cannot be justified and must stop now."
The Governor disclosed that he has summoned a security meeting to carve out strategies to tackle the menace.

DSS Denies Killing Chike Akunyili
The Department of State Security Services, DSS has denied any involvement in the murder of Dr. Chike Akunyili, the husband of late NAFDAC DG, Dora Akunyili.
The secret police in a statement signed by its spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, called on the general public to disregard such rumours.
The statement read in full; "The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to an allegation that its operatives killed Dr. Chike Akunyili. Also, the Service was alerted to a social media video claiming that the “Nigerian DSS” murdered security escorts at Nkpor, Anambra State on 28th September, 2021."
"The Service hereby denies these allegations and wishes to clearly state that they are spurious and illogical. There was no basis for the DSS to kill the Medical Doctor and/or fellow law enforcement agents. The Service cherishes life and believes in the rule of law."
"The public should therefore be wary of the false narratives by those desirous of using it (the Service) to cover up their heinous acts. The operations of these hostile elements are already well known in the public space and to the discerning. Moreover, their desperate effort to divert attention or deploy reverse psychology to deceive unsuspecting members of the public has become a stock in trade that has defined their patterns and trends. It is a matter of time before the law will catch up with them."
