Chef Ayomide Idowu 'Ayo Chef Arrest By Police in 2019 As Reported By Punch Newspaper:
A Lagos-based chef, Ayomide Idowu, has accused some personnel of the state police command of unlawful arrest and arraignment.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the chef was accosted while coming from where he had gone to meet an unidentified person, who posed as an intended client.
It was gathered that Idowu had on June 10 gone to the Ajah area of Lagos to meet a prospective client after receiving a call seeking his service at a private party.
Idowu told PUNCH Metro that the supposed client and his friend sodomised him after beating and robbing him of his phone and money.
It was learnt that the vicitm was arrested by policemen attached to the Ajeromi Police Station around the Boundary roundabout while heading home after his ordeal in the hand of his supposed client.
The 23-year-old (as at 2019) said despite identifying himself to the policemen, he was pushed into a bus with others, who were arrested, adding that the police demanded N20,000 from each of them and he was arraigned when he could not make the payment.
He stated, “I was at work in an eatery around the CMS when I got a call from a man, who got my number from my Instagram page, that he wanted to host a birthday party and that he would want me to prepare food for his guests.
“He asked if I could come to the Ajah park and I took permission from my boss and I left for the venue, and on getting to the park I met, the man and he took me to an uncompleted building, where one of his friends was waiting for him, but before I could ask questions, I was beaten, my phone and the N5,000 I had on me were collected and I was sodomised.
“I was trekking from the CMS to Apapa, where I live, but on getting to the Boundary roundabout, some policemen stopped me and asked where I was coming from and I said from work and I showed them my identity card, but they threw it away and pushed me into their bus, saying that I looked like a thief.
“We were taken to the station and in the morning, everybody was asked to pay N20,000 each, but I was unable to pay and I was taken to the mobile court in Alausa.
“From the mobile court, I was taken to the Badagry Prison, where I spent two months and two weeks before the next adjourned date. But the magistrate asked me what I was doing for a living and I told him that I am a chef and he asked if I had any evidence. A man, who was arrested alongside with me and lives in my area, stood up to confirm that I’m a chef. I left the prison on August 20.”
Speaking on his experience while in prison, Idowu added, “My experience in prison was not palatable; I felt like committing suicide while I was there; I suffered while in prison. On my first day in prison, I was given 20 strokes of the cane by the inmates as part of the welcome ritual.
“I want justice. I feel hurt. I have lost my self-esteem, suffered isolation and depression. I am even afraid of what tomorrow holds.”
Idowu, who noted that he had the intention of reporting his ordeal with his supposed clients to the police, noted that he could not because of what he was subjected to by the police.
