Efa (real name Efa Iwara) is a rapper, Hip-Hop enthusiast and actor.

Born in the ancient city of Ibadan, Oyo State, he discovered he had a passion for rap at a rather young age and went on to write his first verse by the time he turned nine. After high school, he gained admission into the University of Ibadan to study Geography. While at UI, he, along with 3 friends, including DJ Klem formed a group called X-Factor. After a while, the artistes grew apart as they were headed in different directions and the group split up.

Things were to go from bad to worse for him for right after the group disbanded, Efa lost his sister in 2007. Needless to say, his music took a backstage at this point as he mourned. It took the intervention of a close friend to reignite his passion for music and get him back into the studio. Efa went back to writing and recording with his former group member, DJ Klem. Together, they recorded Kwenu, a single which, despite its unreleased status, went on to feature prominently in NYSC camps in Western Nigeria in 2008.

In a bid to discover how well he had developed since signing to Jus’ Kiddin’, he was enrolled in the Peak Talent Show where he was one of the final six at the Ibadan Zone, the only rapper to achieve that feat.

With a debut album in 2011, Efa released singles and remixes from the summer of 2010 to introduce himself to the Nigerian market. EFA has shown his softer side with his love-themed and inspired rap verses on his cover of Mo’Cheddah’s “If You Want Me“; DJ Klem’s “Try Again” as well as his recent track “One More Chance“; has taken a more hardcore turn in the road.

In a chat with Punch, Efa Iwara revealed his background

Tell us about your background.

My father is a retired professor of Linguistics and my mother is a librarian. I am from Ugep in Cross River State but I was born and raised in Ibadan, Oyo State. I attended Staff School, Ibadan, for my elementary education, and the International School, Barth Road, Ibadan, for my secondary education. I graduated from the University of Ibadan, where I bagged a degree in Geography.

How did you get into the movie industry?

It started when I was nine years old and I performed in Ola Rotimi’s play, The gods are not to blame. I found it interesting but for some reason, I couldn’t join the drama group. I used to enact roles for my friends and family members at home, just to entertain them. When I moved to Lagos and wasn’t getting many roles, my manager suggested I went for auditions and I liked the idea. At that point, I was still in the music business. Acting just happened for me as it was something I enjoyed doing.
